One of our favorite things to shoot! Pageant headshots!
Whether you’re competing for Miss USA, Miss America, a state pageant, or a local festival title, you need a killer headshot to get the judges’ attention!
Here are a few tips to make sure you’re camera ready for your session:
Starting with the hair: Make sure that your roots have been touched up. And if you are planning on changing hair color before your pageant, be sure to make your appointment before your headshot. You want your headshot to look like YOU do in person.
Wax your eyebrows (or microblade) several days before your appointment. Waxing or plucking always leaves skin a little red. Great eyebrows are a great start to a beautiful face. Unruly brows are really hard to compensate for, even with an outstanding makeup artist.
If you plan on using self tanner or getting a spray tan, be sure to test it out a few weeks before photos. You want the color to be what you expect, and tanners have a way of doing their own thing. If you use self tanner, use a good quality brand that comes with a mitt. Your hands will likely show, and tanner has a way of sticking between fingers and leaving orange streaks.
Do your nails in a neutral color, or just use clear polish. Natural nails are fine, as long as they are well groomed. If you have acrylics, bring a press-on nail kit (like you get at a drugstore) and have a bottle of the polish you are wearing with you for emergency nail breaks.
This one seems crazy. But shave your arms. Dark hair really shows in photos, and it gets distracting. No, your arm hair won’t grow back like Chewbacca if you shave. Trust me. And your photos will be better for doing it.
We always recommend one of our makeup artists do your makeup. If you plan on doing your own, be sure to wear false lashes. We also recommend neutral colored lips. Bring several shades of lip color in case one is not photographing well.
For outfits, our rule of thumb is bring 2-3 outfits for each “look” that you are scheduled to do. It’s always best to have several options. Sometimes things look great in person, but don’t translate well in photos. Bring several pairs of earrings. Traditional pageant earrings are fine, but be sure to bring a pair of gold or silver hoops and perhaps a stud like a pearl. Even if you have long hair, ears will show, and no earrings looks like you just forgot.
We love seeing girls bring sweaters for headshots! It’s been the trend to shoot more casual headshots. Tops with interesting ruffles are great, as are one-sleeved tops or something off the shoulder. Simple is best. Same goes for necklaces and other jewelry. We want the focus to be on you, not what you’re wearing.
If you are a titleholder, be sure to bring your crown and sash! Even if these aren’t required photos, you’ll want to have a few for autograph cards, program books, and social media.
Headshot sessions are anything but boring! We have a lot of fun, and we really love watching our clients shine in front of the camera! If you have any questions about your appointment, or would like to chat about making an appointment, give us a call or contact us here!
